Pharmaceutical industries
Pharmaceutical industries like all other manufacturing industries involve a series of processing steps. A complete product production process involves activities such as design conception, manufacture, extraction, processing, purification, packaging, delivery and storage. Pharmaceutical manufacturing includes all these processing steps of chemical substances to produce essential drugs and medications.
The whole process of Pharmaceutical manufacturing can be categorized into two major units. The first unit is also known as primary processing stage and it administers the production of active drug ingredients. This very step involves various research facilities and, stipulates active involvement of pharmaceutical engineers and technocrats to provide effective pharmaceutical ingredients.
The secondary processing unit is the second stage of manufacturing process and it takes into account various methods to convert active pharmaceutical ingredients into suitable drug products. Thus, this step constitutes final drug processing techniques to generate out products which are used as pharmaceuticals in healthcare facilities for the administration of patients suffering from health disorders.
The pharmaceutical products are available in various configurations including solid, semi-solid and liquid forms. Some of the common appearances are tablets, capsules, creams and ointments. Liquid pharmaceuticals may take the forms of solutions, gels, emulsions, suspensions or injectables. Various inhalable products or aerosols also sell out in the market which basically uses chlorofluorocarbons and butane, and are applied for external purpose only.
The major categories of manufactured drugs include antibiotics, vitamins, several synthetic drugs and hormones, vaccines, glandular products and other pharmaceutical chemicals. Some drugs having plant origin are also delivered from pharmaceutical manufacturing plants. Various patient specific and personal safety equipments including dressing of personnel are manufactured in many of the drug processing plants.
The process of active drug ingredient synthesis and their usage in delivering prescribed drugs covers following principle manufacturing steps:
- Process of intermediates preparation
- Addressing functional groups
- Coupling and Esterification
- Process of cleaning
- Process of purification
Besides, granulation, drying, tablet pressing, coating prints on tablets, filling and packaging are also included in the drug manufacturing process.
